September in Oviedo

Oviedo – America Day in Asturias

America Day in Asturias and Feast Day of St. Matthew (Las fiestas de San Mateo)

The las Fiestas de San Mateo (Saint Matthew) is a festival with religious significance and it takes place at the end of summer in late September.

15 – 21 September, 2018

This festival occurs throughout Spain and many other Christian countries and usually involves elaborate parades and the drinking of wine and the offering of thanks for the season’s harvest. The main day of this fiesta is 21 September although the celebrations usually last an entire week.

The America Day in Asturias was held in Oviedo for the first time in 1950 and, since then, this annual event has been held every 19th September inside of Fiestas de San Mateo. Oviedo, the Asturian capital has alway strived for connections between cultures and forging social and human relationships. Few parades exist in the world that pay homage to emigration-immigration. For decades, Asturians have been crossing the Atlantic in search of better luck. Oviedo pays tribute to the crossroads, to the origin and destination, to the bonds created between one another, to opportunities, successes and failures; with a colorful parade, and music and folklore from both sides.

America Day in Asturias is a clear example of all this coming together in a single and unforgettable day.
