Amazon Prime Day 2021 officially starts on Monday, June 21 at 12 a.m. PDT and runs through to Tuesday, June 22 at 11:59 p.m. PDT. This is the online retailer’s biggest sale of the year and it lasts for 48-hours. In terms of potential savings, it certainly rivals Black Friday. In the past, it was held in July but with the pandemic, it moved to October. This year, they have moved it to June. It is a sale you don’t want to miss especially if you are in the market for electronics including mobile devices.
There are countless of items already discounted across the site, kind of like a taste of what’s ahead for Amazon Prime Day. But, first things first. Let’s go over some of the basics.
What Is Amazon Prime Day?
Amazon Prime Day started in July of 2015 as a one-day sale event intended to celebrate the company’s 20th anniversary, and has since grown into an annual two-day affair in which Amazon offers major discounts across all of its product categories.
In addition to the 48-hour deals, you’ll also find a staggering number of Lightning Deals, which are only available for a very limited time—usually 2 to 6 hours. There are also pre-Prime Day and post-Prime Day deals in the weeks before and after the sale.
Do You Need To Be A Prime Member To Shop Prime Day Sales?
YES! To take advantage of Prime Day sales, you have to be an Amazon Prime member. If this is your first time trying Amazon Prime, you’ll get a 30-day free trial. Prime members receive a many perks like one- and two-day delivery on many items throughout the site, free access to Amazon Fresh grocery shopping and countless more including free entertainment through Prime Music, Prime Video, Kindle eBooks, Audible Audio Books and more.
If you’re not already a member, the simplest way to become an Amazon Prime member is by going to the Amazon Prime sign-up page and filling out the required information. If you’ve never shopped on Amazon before, you’ll have to start by creating a free Amazon account. From there, Amazon will offer you a 30-day free trial of Prime once you enter your credit card information. After the 30 days are up, you’ll automatically be charged for membership, though the exact amount depends on which plan you choose. Of course, you can also choose to cancel and avoid paying any subscription fee after your free trial is over.
Prime costs 36€ per year, or 4.99€ if you pay monthly. It’s worth signing up if you make several purchases and to get access to other Amazon services. Students get a 90-day free Prime Student trial. Afterwards membership is half price (18€/year) until they graduate (or for up to 4 years).
How Does Prime Day Work?
Typically, Amazon has released its Prime Day deals at midnight PDT on the first day of the sale. From that point on, many of the discounts are typically available through midnight PDT on the second day of the sale, with the exception of Lightning Deals which are usually only live for a few hours. As long as you’ve signed up for Amazon Prime, you can shop Prime Day deals and you’ll get free shipping on every order that you make during the 48-hour window.
What Will Be On Sale During Amazon Prime Day 2021?
Prime Day is a site-wide sale, so you can expect deals across all of Amazon’s product categories including tech, fashion, beauty and home. Beyond that, there’s no way to know exactly what’s going to be on sale until Prime Day actually starts. We can only guess based on previous years. Amazon revealed that in 2020, Prime members saved more than $1.4 billion on Prime Day 2020, with best-selling products around the world including the Echo Dot, Fire TV Stick 4K with Alexa Voice Remote, iRobot Roomba Robot Vacuum, LifeStraw Personal Water Filter, and Lego Star Wars Stormtrooper Helmet.
Normally, there are huge discounts on Amazon devices, like the Echo Dot which was 40% off during last year’s sale. Amazon Prime Day usually features great deals on robot vacuums, headphones and even kitchen appliances. It’s the perfect time to stock up on household and beauty items, which we expect to find at a big discount.
Can You Actually Save Money On Prime Day?
It depends on what you’re shopping for. Prime Day typically features deep discounts on items like Samsung mobile phones and accessories, Lenovo Idea Pad and accessories, home gadgets like Echo Dot and iRobot and so much more. The markdowns are generally so big that you’re not likely to see discounts this deep again until Black Friday or Cyber Monday. In those cases, Prime Day deals are definitely worth it.
If you end up buying items that are only marked down by 5 to 10%, you’re not likely to save very much, since Amazon offers those kind of markdowns year-round anyway.
How To Prepare For Amazon Prime Day 2021
First, make sure have signed up to be an Amazon Prime member ahead of Prime Day. It’s also a good idea to plan out your budget and create a shopping list detailing any products you need, or items you’ve had your eye on for a while now. With so many great deals available, this will hopefully prevent you from getting drawn into the Amazon Prime Day craziness and help you with decisions on what to buy.
